This summer Zhangzhou Library became a “cool and refreshing place for reading”, thanks to CHINA SPH Property’s “zone temperature control” solution. Such a special design received praise from readers, affirmation from owners and media report, and in particular, reduced the electricity costs by RMB 70,000 in August, compared with the same period last year.
Before the solution, the temperature regulation in the library could not cater everyone. According to the property manager Li Lulu, “energy conservation does not mean lowering the service quality”. After precise calculation, the team found that air conditioning energy accounted for 65% of the total energy consumed so they decided to improve the energy conservation effect. On the basis of a large amount of data accumulated via the “dual-time-section temperature measurement mechanism”, Su Yueyong, the electrical and mechanical supervisor, solved the problems such as “corners inaccessible to air conditioning services” in the ancient book areas, and optimized solutions based on reader feedback.
Instead of following the “one-size-fits-all approach” method, the team divided the library into slight cold area (26-27℃), comfort area (24-25℃) and cool area (22-23℃), all of which are marked with temperature labels. Su Yueyong summarized the “dynamic adjustment method”, which adjusts temperature dynamically based on people flow, time period, etc. The team members experienced and verified the effect. The temperature in each area differs as needed. For example, the temperature in the children's area is set based on children’s active nature, and that in the ancient book area is set to facilitate the preservation of classic books.
Such a special design yields significant outcome. For instance, the electricity costs in August were reduced by RMB 70,000, reflecting the value of the “green service” concept. Readers can truly feel the difference: the retired teachers no longer need to take jackets, and children can also learn the idea of energy conservation from it. The design means not only temperature regulation, but also precise service, and implies the emphasis on “environmental protection”.
